Introducing Sage’s Ortega – England’s ‘Rising Star’

Introducing the brand-new addition to our range, Sage’s Ortega. A grape to get excited about…

One of the most exciting aspects of winemaking in England, especially at Balfour Winery, is our constant drive to innovate and pioneer new wines. We are always exploring different grape varieties, experimenting with different styles, and discovering unique combinations of soil and vine to push the boundaries of what’s possible.

That’s why we’re thrilled to introduce a new addition to our collection: Sage’s Ortega. This lesser-known variety has the potential to become a true star of our region for years to come.

What is Ortega?

Ortega is a white grape variety that might not be as well-known as some of its European counterparts, but it’s rapidly gaining recognition, particularly in cooler climates. Originally developed in Germany in the 1940s, Ortega is a cross between Müller-Thurgau and Siegerrebe, bred specifically for early ripening. Its resilience to cooler temperatures and shorter growing seasons makes it an ideal choice for England, where our unique climate helps it thrive.

“Ortega thrives in our cool climate. It ripens beautifully here, and Sage’s Ortega 2023 showcases just how expressive this grape can be. The pineapple character and fresh acidity make this a truly exciting wine.”

– Head winemaker, Fergus Elias

What does it taste like?

Sage’s Ortega is a delightful expression of this grape. Expect a wine that is aromatic and vibrant, with delicate floral notes and a burst of citrus. It balances bright acidity with a soft, rounded texture, making it a refreshing yet complex wine. There’s a real pineapple character here, but with hints of peach, apricot, and subtle spice come through on the palate, creating a rich and elegant finish that pairs beautifully with a range of dishes or can be enjoyed on its own.

Why is it so well suited to England?

England’s cooler climate provides the perfect growing conditions for Ortega. The grape ripens early, meaning it avoids some of the challenges posed by unpredictable weather later in the season. At Balfour, the unique terroir of our vineyards – from the chalky soils to the temperate weather – enhances Ortega’s natural acidity and structure, giving it a distinctive English twist. Sage’s Ortega is a true expression of our dedication to innovation, sustainability, and making wines that are not only authentically English but also world-class.

Whether you’re a seasoned wine lover or just discovering English wine, Sage’s Ortega is one to watch – a rising star that will no doubt take its place among the best wines of the region for years to come.

What to pair with Ortega?

Sage’s Ortega is a versatile wine that pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. Its bright acidity and citrus notes make it a perfect match for seafood like oysters, prawns, or scallops, while its floral and stone fruit flavours complement creamy goat’s cheese in salads or tarts. The hint of spice in the wine works well with mildly spiced dishes such as Thai green curry or pho, and its fruitiness enhances the herb-infused flavours of roast chicken. For vegetarians, Ortega pairs wonderfully with dishes like vegetable risotto, grilled asparagus, or roasted butternut squash, highlighting their earthy and sweet elements.
